How it all began . . . Our Director, Tamra, has had a passion for music since she began publicly performing at age 10. As a music major in college she discovered that she also had a passion for teaching. She says, “I just love to teach - anyone, anything, anywhere”. She landed her first teaching job as an elementary music specialist in Salem and it was there, with her youngest students, she found her forte. During her experience in a particularly rough school, Tamra became brokenhearted for children she saw suffering from the effects of abuse, neglect and unskilled parenting. It was then she decided to pursue her master’s degree in counseling psychology with an emphasis on children (play therapy and school counseling). Now, with her broad background and over five years of Kindermusik classes under her belt (and a few years of parenting, too), Tamra brings her passions of teaching, music, play therapy and parenting together with her families every week in a powerful, whole-child approach to music education. Quality music education - absolutely, but we are so much more than just music! Kids & Music began in 2003 with two summer camps and a vision for excellence. By the second semester, it was already clear that a one-woman show was not enough to meet the growing demand. Lizbeth Cattle - a board certified music therapist with an impressive resume and an even more impressive teaching style - was recruited to join the staff and has been well received by her families. Kids & Music has more than quadrupled with each new semester opening with more students than the previous. Kids & Music is gaining the reputation of being not only a fun music class for kids, but a wonderful place for parents to grow and learn with their children in a truly significant experience. |
